Deputy Chancellor to speak at Law School's May Commencement
Announcement by School of Law Dean, R. Lawrence Dessem
I am happy to inform you that Deputy Chancellor Michael Middleton will be the speaker at this May’s commencement.
The Deputy Chancellor earned both his undergraduate and law degrees from MU. After graduation from the Law School, Middleton served as Trial Attorney in the Civil Rights Division of the United States Department of Justice and in 1977 was appointed Assistant Deputy Director of the Office for Civil Rights at the Department of Health, Education and Welfare.
He subsequently served as Director of the Office of Systemic Programs for the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, as Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights in the Department of Education, and as Associate General Counsel of the EEOC’s Trial Division (supervising 250 attorneys across the country involved in federal litigation activities).
Deputy Chancellor returned to the Law School as a professor in 1985, coming most immediately from service as Director of the St. Louis District Office of the EEOC.
Although he remains a member of the Law School faculty, Michael Middleton has served as MU’s Interim Vice Provost for Minority Affairs, and, since 1997, as Deputy Chancellor of the University of Missouri-Columbia. The Deputy Chancellor has served on various national advisory committees and is a Fellow of both the Missouri Bar and the American Bar Association.
It will be a rare treat to hear from Deputy Chancellor Middleton at our May 13 Commencement ceremony.
